I finally managed to snag a PS5 after saving up for months and I also have my older Xbox Series X hooked up to this ancient 24 inch 1080p monitor I stole from my office like three years ago. It looks okay I guess but I feel like Im totally wasting the power of these consoles you know? Like what is even the point of having next gen if it looks like a blurry mess on my desk. I want to upgrade to 4K but man the market is a total nightmare to navigate right now especially since I only have about 350 bucks maybe 400 if I stretch it to spend on this.

I spent all of last night looking at reviews and I keep seeing the Gigabyte M28U pop up everywhere as the gold standard for consoles because of the HDMI 2.1 ports but that thing is still way over what I can afford right now unless it goes on a massive sale or something. Then I saw the LG 27UL500-W which is way cheaper and fits my budget perfectly but then people in the comments were saying the HDR is basically fake and that it only does 60Hz. This is where I get really confused because I play mostly single player stuff like Elden Ring and God of War so do I actually need 120Hz? Some people say once you go 120 you can never go back but if I have to choose between 4K resolution and high refresh rate on a budget which one actually makes the games look better?

I am also kinda worried about the panel types because I play in a pretty dark room in my apartment in Chicago so if the blacks look gray its gonna drive me crazy. Is there like a hidden gem out there that hits that sweet spot for someone who isnt a pro esports player but wants their games to actually look sharp? I really want to get this sorted before the end of the month since I have some time off coming up. What is the actual best budget 4K monitor for a dual console setup that wont break the bank?

Look for the Gigabyte M27U 27 inch 4K 160Hz on sale! This thing is a fantastic piece of tech because it uses a high-bandwidth SS IPS panel. You get that 4K clarity with 160Hz refresh, which is amazing for the Series X. Since you play in a dark room, the contrast isnt OLED level, but the pixel density makes everything look so sharp! Definitely the best budget-friendly beast right now.

Stumbled on this today while browsing. Unfortunately, the sub-400 dollar 4K market is basically a minefield of compromises right now. I had issues finding anything that truly ticks every box for a dark room setup without spending double your budget. Its a bit of a letdown tbh.

  • Contrast is everything for your dark room. You mentioned being worried about gray blacks. Unfortunately, most budget 4K screens use IPS panels, like the LG 27UL500-W 27-inch 4K IPS, which have pretty weak contrast. In a dark room, those blacks will definitely look like a muddy gray. You might want to look at a VA panel like the LG 32UN500-W 32-inch 4K UHD VA to get deeper blacks, even if you lose the wider viewing angles of an IPS.
  • Refresh rate realities. Since you play Elden Ring and God of War, 60Hz is actually fine because those games usually target 30 or 60 fps in quality mode anyway. However, missing out on 120Hz means you wont get the smooth movement in the system menus or the few titles that actually hit high frames. At your budget, you have to choose resolution or speed. You cant have both.
  • The HDR lie. Just a heads up, HDR400 on these cheap units is not as good as expected. It basically just washes out the image because the backlight isnt strong enough to do real highlights. Its mostly marketing fluff. Honestly, if you want 4K right now on that budget, you are gonna have to settle for 60Hz. Its a frustrating spot to be in when you just bought two powerful consoles, but thats just where the market is at for 350 bucks.

Quick reply while I'm on my break... unfortunately, I've had issues with cheap 4K screens. Buying a budget one last year was a mistake because it was not as good as expected in a dark room. If you want something reliable, wait for a sale on the Samsung Odyssey G7 S28AG70 28 inch 4K 144Hz. Its way safer for console gaming than those basic office monitors... dont waste your cash.

Just caught this thread today. I totally agree that hitting that 120Hz+ range is worth the hunt because even in single player games the input lag is way lower. I would suggest being really careful about the panel type tho. Since you are in a dark room, IPS glow is gonna be your biggest enemy. Most budget 4K displays only have a 1000:1 contrast ratio which makes dark games like Elden Ring look kinda washed out. Make sure to check if a screen has at least 350 nits or maybe look into VA panels for those deep blacks. Most budget HDR is basically fake anyway since they dont have enough dimming zones to make the image actually pop. TL;DR: High refresh is great for response times but watch out for low contrast and IPS glow if you play in the dark.

ngl I am literally in the same boat as you right now. trying to find a 4k screen for under 400 that doesnt look like washed out garbage in the dark is like finding a needle in a haystack. i spent my whole weekend comparing specs and honestly its kind of a headache because every budget option seems to have some massive catch... been thinking about your situation and i found a few things you might want to consider while hunting:

  • you might want to consider the ASUS TUF Gaming VG289Q 28 inch 4K IPS. its usually way under your budget which is nice for the wallet. be careful tho because it only hits 60hz. since you play elden ring it looks stunning, but you wont get that high refresh smoothness for faster games.
  • make sure to check out the Dell S2721QS 27 inch 4K UHD. i would suggest comparing this directly to that LG you saw. the stand is way better and the panel quality usually feels a bit more premium for the price, tho the blacks are still gonna be slightly gray in a pitch black room.
  • i would suggest keeping an eye on the Acer Nitro XV282K KVbmiipruzx 28 inch 4K 144Hz. its the closest rival to the gigabyte m28u and sometimes it goes on crazy clearance. if you can find it near 400, it actually has the hdmi 2.1 you want for the consoles.
