so i finally caved and bought a ps5 last week mainly for cod and the new spiderman game. ive been building pcs for like a decade so i figured i knew what i was doing but man this console stuff is weirdly picky. i hooked it up to my current 144hz monitor via hdmi and for some reason the ps5 is just refusing to go above 60hz in the system settings even though i have performance mode enabled in the presets. i guess my current panel doesnt have the right edid or hdmi 2.1 support to trigger the high refresh rate on sonys hardware... which is super annoying since it works fine on my rtx card.

i really need a solid 27 inch replacement that is 100% confirmed to hit that 120hz sweet spot on ps5 without me having to buy some weird signal spoofing dongle or whatever. my budget is sitting around $400 maybe a bit more if it is worth it and im trying to grab something from best buy or amazon by friday so i can actually play at a decent frame rate with my squad.

should i be looking specifically for hdmi 2.1 only or are there 2.0 monitors that definitely work?

  • must be 1440p or 4k (1080p is too blurry for me now)
  • low input lag is a priority
  • hdr would be nice but not if it sucks at this price point

let me know what you guys are actually using right now because i dont want to deal with another return...

honestly be careful chasing 4k at that price point because you usually end up with a panel that has terrible response times. i would suggest sticking to 1440p to save some cash.

I dealt with flickering and returns until getting the MSI G274QPF E2 27 inch 1440p 180Hz.

  • it works perfectly
  • budget friendly Definitely a safe, decent option that wont break the bank.

You definitely want HDMI 2.1 to avoid those timing headaches! I love the LG 27GR93U 27-inch 4K 144Hz because it hits that 120Hz sweet spot perfectly on PS5 with full bandwidth support! It is super fast and looks amazing.

  • 4K resolution at 144Hz
  • HDMI 2.1 for full PS5 VRR
  • IPS panel looks fantastic Its basically the best bang for your buck right now and wont let you down!

Jumping in here because I went through this exact mess last month. I'm super satisfied with my current setup now that it actually works. You dont strictly need HDMI 2.1 for 1440p at 120Hz, as a good 2.0 port can handle it if the timings are right.

  • My screen hits 120Hz perfectly over HDMI 2.0
  • Performance mode finally stays toggled on
  • Everything feels much smoother in Spiderman

@Reply #5 - good point! Unfortunately, the lack of consistency in HDMI handshakes between consoles and monitors is really frustrating for those of us used to the plug-and-play nature of DisplayPort on PCs. I have spent a lot of time troubleshooting these issues lately and the results are often not as good as expected. Honestly, it is a mess.

  • Gigabyte M27U 27-inch 4K 160Hz: This is technically great for 4K 120Hz support on PS5 but the firmware updates are a total pain and the build quality feels a bit cheap.
  • ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQV 27-inch 1440p 170Hz: This model is reliable for hitting that 120Hz mark without any spoofing, though the HDR is unfortunately useless and looks washed out.
  • Samsung Odyssey G65B 27-inch 1440p 240Hz: While it handles the console refresh rate correctly, I had issues with scanlines and the smart features are incredibly sluggish. If you want to avoid another return, dont bother with older HDMI 2.0 budget models. It just isnt worth the headache when trying to get these specific timings to work properly... it makes me miss the simplicity of a dedicated GPU setup.

> should i be looking specifically for hdmi 2.1 only or are there 2.0 monitors that definitely work? Just saw this. Honestly, avoid the budget Samsung lines or older Asus TUF screens. I had a nightmare with their firmware not talking to the PS5 correctly. Unfortunately, even if the box says 144Hz, the HDMI handshake is usually buggy on cheaper panels. I wasted weeks dealing with black screens before giving up. Some brands just dont care about console users tbh. Market is full of junk that only works on PC.
