Hey everyone! I’m finally looking to upgrade my sim racing rig, and I’ve decided that a high-quality ultrawide is the way to go for that extra immersion. Currently, I’m running a standard 27-inch 16:9 monitor, and while it gets the job done, I’m really tired of having such a limited field of view. I feel like I’m missing the apex on tight corners because I just can't see far enough to the sides, and it’s making wheel-to-wheel racing a bit of a guessing game.
I’ve been doing some research, but I’m a bit torn between going with a 34-inch or jumping all the way up to a 49-inch super ultrawide. My desk space is somewhat limited, so a 49-inch would be a tight squeeze, but if the immersion is significantly better for titles like iRacing and Assetto Corsa Competizione, I’m willing to make it work.
I’m specifically looking for something with a high refresh rate—at least 144Hz—and a decent curvature (maybe 1000R?) to really wrap around my vision. My budget is around $800 to $1,200, but I could stretch it a bit if there’s a 'gold standard' monitor that everyone swears by. I’m also slightly worried about ghosting or motion blur during high-speed segments, as that really kills the realism for me.
For those of you who have made the switch to an ultrawide for racing, what has your experience been like? Are there specific models that offer the best balance of color accuracy and speed without breaking the bank? Also, is the jump from 1440p to a higher resolution worth the extra strain on the GPU for sim racing specifically? I'd love to hear your recommendations on which specific ultrawide monitor provides the most immersive experience for a dedicated racing setup!
Hmm, I've had a different experience. While the G9 is huge, if your space is tight, I'd actually suggest the Alienware AW3423DWF 34-inch QD-OLED Gaming Monitor. It totally solves those ghosting worries since OLED response times are basically instant!! Plus, it fits way better on a desk and still feels amazing for ACC. Seriously, you wont miss the extra width once you see those colors... it's a total game changer! gl!
ngl I had a moment to think about this more and I really wanted to mention the safety and reliability side of things cuz sim racing gear can be a HUGE investment. I remember when I first swapped my 27-inch for a wider screen, I almost dropped the whole monitor while trying to fit it on a desk that was way too small... honestly, it was terrifying lol. For your situation, I would suggest looking at the LG 38GN950-B 38-inch UltraGear Nano IPS Curved Gaming Monitor.
It is like the perfect middle ground between a 34 and a 49-inch. You get that extra height and width without the massive footprint of a super ultrawide, which makes it way safer and more stable on a smaller desk. Plus, it has a 144Hz refresh rate and basically ZERO ghosting compared to some VA panels. Just make sure to check your desk's weight limit! Quick tip: Always use a heavy-duty monitor arm for ultrawides to prevent it from tipping over or wobbling during intense races. gl!
I totally agree with the point about GPU overhead because jumping to these massive resolutions is basically like trying to push two screens at once and it can really tank your frame times if youre not careful. IIRC I heard someone mention that moving to a super ultrawide cuts your FPS by nearly 40 percent compared to standard 16:9 1440p but I am not 100 percent sure on the exact benchmarks for the newest series of cards. Tbh you gotta look at more than just the peak refresh rate if you wanna avoid that weird stuttering feel during high speed transitions and cornering.
sooo i just went through this exact struggle lol. basically, if ur tight on space but want that immersive feel, i think the Samsung Odyssey G9 G95C 49-Inch Curved Gaming Monitor is basically the gold standard for sim racing. honestly, the 1000R curve is HUGE cuz it actually wraps around ur vision so you can see the apex!! 34-inch is okay, but you'll probably just wanna upgrade again in a month tbh. gl!!
Works great for me
Quick question—before I dive into the tech specs, what's your current GPU setup like? I'm honestly worried that jumping to a super ultrawide might tank your frame rates if you don't have the horsepower to push those extra pixels, especially since ghosting is a dealbreaker for you... basically, if you can't hit that 144Hz consistently, the whole experience feels kinda laggy and blurred, so let me know what card you're running first!
