I finally saved up for a 5080 upgrade next month but now I'm literally losing sleep over the monitor choice. My logic was to go 4k since anything less feels like a waste of the card but I'm torn.
I read that the new OLEDs like the PG32UCDM are the gold standard right now but then some forum threads say the HDR brightness isnt actually that great compared to mini-led. I've got about £950 to spend here in London and I just dont want to regret it. Is 4k 240hz actually realistic for single player stuff like Cyberpunk or should I just stick to a higher quality 144hz panel? I keep second guessing everything...
Honestly, be careful with the 4k 240hz hype train if you're mostly playing stuff like Cyberpunk. Even with an RTX 5080, hitting those frame rates natively is gonna be basically impossible without aggressive DLSS or Frame Gen. I would suggest you prioritize image quality over that max refresh rate since 144hz is already plenty smooth for single-player immersion. I've used the ASUS ROG Swift PG32UCDM 32-inch 4K 240Hz OLED and while it's incredible, those forum threads aren't lying about the brightness. If your room in London gets a lot of natural light, you might find the HDR a bit dim during the day. For your 950 pound budget, you might want to consider looking at the Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 32-inch 4K 240Hz Mini-LED instead. It gets way brighter for those HDR highlights and you wont have to baby it to avoid burn-in like you do with OLED panels. Make sure to check if you actually prefer the deep blacks of OLED or the punchy brightness of Mini-LED before dropping that much cash. If you go OLED, the Dell Alienware AW3225QF 32-inch 4K 240Hz QD-OLED is usually a bit cheaper than the Asus and fits your budget better while giving you that crazy contrast. Just dont expect 240 fps in Night City even with a 5080... the tech just isnt there yet for native 4k ultra.
I spent a few weeks testing different 4k screens and honestly, the market is a bit of a mess right now. I thought OLED was the only way to go until I realized how much I hated the aggressive dimming on bright screens during the day. If you're in a room with windows, you might want to consider that before dropping a grand because that ABL can be really distracting.
Adding my two cents since I went down this exact rabbit hole recently. Honestly, I had a pretty disappointing experience thinking that spending nearly a grand would solve all my visual gripes. I bought into the hype of some high-end specs but ended up dealing with annoying auto-brightness limiters that basically ruined the experience during daytime gaming. It really wasnt as good as expected given the price tag. A few things to watch out for:
