What are the actually decent 4K monitors for dev work right now that dont have horrible ghosting or scaling issues because my current setup is literally dying on me. I've been a software engineer for over a decade so I know my way around display panels but my trusty old Dell UltraSharp just started flickering like crazy this morning and I have a huge sprint deadline on Friday so I need a replacement like yesterday.
I'm looking at around a $600 budget maybe up to $800 if its really worth it but I keep seeing conflicting stuff about IPS vs VA for text clarity and I really need sharp text for long coding sessions. I tried a cheap 27 inch 4K last week from a friend and the text was so tiny even with scaling it looked blurry and weird which I didnt expect since 4K is supposed to be better for that kind of thing. Maybe it was just a bad panel or something.
Need something at least 27 or 32 inches with good color accuracy since I do some light design work too but the priority is crisp text and no eye strain. Im in Seattle so I can pick it up at Best Buy or Micro Center today if they have it in stock. Any specific models that are rock solid for MacOS and Windows?
Man, that flickering is the absolute worst when you have a sprint deadline looming... honestly i've been there and it sucks. Since you're used to the UltraSharp life, sticking with Dell is usually the safest bet because their quality control for office panels is generally more consistent than the gaming-focused brands. IPS is 100% the way to go for coding tho. VA panels have weird viewing angles and black smearing that makes text look muddy when you're scrolling through long files. If the 27 inch you tried looked blurry, it was probably a scaling mismatch in the settings rather than the panel itself, but a 32 inch might feel more natural if you hate scaling things up too much. Here are a few that are rock solid and usually in stock at Micro Center or Best Buy:
To add to the point above: I spent way too much time testing panels before settling on the ProArt series. Had that same blurry scaling nightmare with a budget monitor once... turned out to be a cheap controller chip. Check out the ASUS ProArt PA329CV 32-inch 4K IPS.
To add to the point above: definitely stick with IPS for coding. VA panels often have subpixel layouts that make text look blurry, which probably caused that weirdness you saw before. If youre heading to Best Buy today, look for the LG 32UQ850-W 32-inch 4K Nano IPS Black. Its super reliable for Mac and the text clarity is honestly top tier.
