I finally managed to snag a PS5, but now I’m realizing my old office monitor just isn't cutting it. I really want to take full advantage of what the console can do, but my budget is strictly under $500. I’ve been doing some research, but I’m honestly a bit overwhelmed by all the technical specs like HDMI 2.1, VRR, and response times.
I’m mainly looking for something that can handle 4K resolution, or at least a really solid 1440p that supports 120Hz for smoother gameplay in shooters like Call of Duty. Since I play in a relatively bright room, a panel with decent peak brightness and good color accuracy for those cinematic games like God of War would be amazing. I’ve looked at a few options from Gigabyte and LG, but I’m worried about ghosting issues or getting a screen that doesn't actually support the PS5's specific features.
Has anyone found a 'sweet spot' monitor in this price range that feels like a genuine upgrade? Specifically, are there any models under $500 that you’ve personally tested with a PS5 that consistently hit that 120Hz mark without flickering? I’d love to hear your recommendations before I pull the trigger!
Just sharing my experience: I went through this last year and honestly spent weeks obsessing over the same specs. I ended up trying two different monitors because I was so worried about 120Hz support.
1. **LG 27GR83B-B 27-inch UltraGear QHD 240Hz Gaming Monitor** vs. **ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ3A 27-inch 1440p 180Hz Monitor**
- The **LG UltraGear** was a huge win for me cuz it actually supports HDMI 2.1. Even tho it's 1440p, it handles the PS5's VRR perfectly, which stopped all that annoying screen tearing in Call of Duty. Plus, the brightness is solid for a lit room.
- The **ASUS TUF** was a bit cheaper, and while the colors were *really* nice for God of War, I had a weird flickering issue once or twice with the 120Hz mode. It mightve just been my cable tho!
I eventually stuck with the LG cuz it felt more "future-proof" for the budget. Its totally possible to find that sweet spot under $500 if your okay with 1440p instead of 4K!
For your situation, i'd seriously look at the Gigabyte M28U 28" 144K UHD 144Hz Gaming Monitor. It's basically the 'sweet spot' for PS5 cuz it actually has HDMI 2.1, which you NEED for full 4K at 120Hz. Most monitors under $500 are only 1440p, but this one hits the 4K mark and usually goes for around $450 these days. The IPS panel is pretty bright, so it should handle your room lighting just fine. If you wanna save a bit more, the LG 27GP850-B 27” Ultragear QHD Nano IPS Gaming Monitor is a solid 1440p alternative that supports VRR on PS5, tho it wont be as crisp as 4K. Honestly, make sure you use the cable that came with the console or you wont get those high frame rates!!
sooo i totally feel u on this. honestly i was in the exact same spot a few months back when i finally got my console. i was super excited to play some god of war but my old screen made it look... well, basically like a ps3 game lol. unfortunately i first tried a super cheap 4k panel i found on sale and it was a total disaster because it didnt actually have hdmi 2.1 so i was stuck at 60hz for everything which was kinda disappointing tbh.
after returning that i did some more digging and found what i think is the sweet spot for a ps5 budget setup. for your situation, i would suggest looking at the Gigabyte M28U 28-inch 4K 144Hz Gaming Monitor. i managed to find it on sale for like $450 and it actually has the proper hdmi 2.1 ports u need to hit that 120hz mark in call of duty. it even has vrr support so u dont get those weird screen tearing issues i kept seeing on my older displays.
plus it gets pretty bright which helps if ur room is sunny like mine. the colors are really solid too for those cinematic games tho it's not quite as good as some $1000 oled screens obviously... but for under 500 bucks its literally a massive upgrade. just keep in mind that the hdr is kinda mid tbh - i usually just leave it off because it looks a bit washed out sometimes? but yeah for raw 4k 120hz gameplay it actually works. anyway gl with the hunt!! 👍
