im actually stressing out a bit because i managed to snag an rtx 5080 preorder through a hookup at a local shop but my current monitor is a literal potato. its this old 1080p 60hz acer thing that flickers if i even breathe on the desk and obviously i cant run a brand new 50 series card on that lol. i really need to buy something by tonight so it gets here by the time the card arrives next friday because i took the whole weekend off work just to game and i dont want to be staring at a blurry mess.
my desk space is super limited since im in a tiny studio apartment in seattle so 32 inch monitors are a total no-go for me. i know everyone says go 4k for a card this fast but i just dont have the room and i honestly prefer the super high frame rates of 1440p for stuff like valorant and apex anyway. budget is around $800 to $900 max so im looking at the top tier stuff.
right now im torn between two main ones and a third wildcard. first is the alienware aw2725df which is that 360hz qd-oled. the colors look unbelievable in every video i see and that instant response time sounds perfect for competitive play. but i also use this monitor for my day job like 8-9 hours a day so im terrified of burn in with all the static windows and excel sheets i have open constantly. then there is the asus rog swift pg27aqn which is ips. its also 360hz and i wouldnt have to worry about the panel dying on me but its almost the same price as the oled which feels kinda weird? like am i paying for older tech just for peace of mind? i also looked at the lg 27gs95qe but i heard the matte coating is kinda grainy compared to the glossy alienware.
if you were dropping this much cash to pair with a 5080 which way would you go? is the oled risk worth it for the 5080s power or should i play it safe with the high end ips asus? really need to pull the trigger today so hit me with what you think...
To add to the point above: I totally agree about avoiding OLED for heavy office work. I picked up the ASUS ROG Swift PG27AQN 27-inch 1440p 360Hz IPS and honestly, I'm super satisfied. It works well for my job during the day and then absolutely crushes it in games at night. No complaints about the speed or colors... it's the perfect match for a 5080 without the burn-in stress.
Like someone mentioned, office work will absolutely wreck an OLED and its just isnt worth the stress! I spent years overpaying for flagship monitors before finding the ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQMR. It hits 300Hz and handles my spreadsheets all day perfectly. Its way cheaper than that Swift too... honestly an amazing way to save cash for more games, ngl.
Honestly, I had a pretty rough experience trying to use an OLED for my job. Within months I had shadows of my spreadsheets burned into the screen and it was a total letdown. Unfortunately, those panels just arent built for office work. If I were you, Id just grab any high-end IPS from ASUS. You cant go wrong with their quality and you wont be constantly stressing about it dying.
@Reply #2 - good point! Honestly im stuck in the exact same loop and it sucks. My old roommate had a similar thing where he bought a top-tier screen and unfortunately the backlight bleed was so bad it looked like a flashlight was on in the corner. He spent months arguing with support and it was just not as good as expected. Now im terrified of getting a lemon myself... what a nightmare.
