honestly im so lost with all these numbers and letters and it is actually driving me crazy. i just want a good screen for my games but every time i look at a review people start talking about panel types like ips or va or oled and response times that are like 1ms or 0.5ms but then someone else says those numbers are all lies anyway?? i play a lot of counter strike and valorant and my friends keep telling me i need to move up to 1440p because my old 1080p monitor looks blurry but i dont want to lose my competitive edge or whatever. im really sorry if this is a super basic question i just have no idea where to start and the more i read the more confused i get.

heres what i need:

  • budget is around 400 or 500 dollars max
  • i live in the us so i can shop at best buy or amazon
  • need it by this weekend because my current one is flickering
  • must be good for fast shooting games

is there just one that everyone agrees is the best one right now? like i dont want to spend three days researching just to buy the wrong thing. do i need 240hz or is 144hz enough? my head hurts from looking at all these specs. please just tell me what to buy...

Like someone mentioned, 240Hz is the move. Unfortunately many panels in this price bracket have terrible backlight bleed. I was honestly so let down by my last budget screen because it just wasnt as good as expected. What GPU are you rocking though? 1440p at 240fps is a huge jump from 1080p.

  • 240Hz reduces the total system latency so your shots register faster
  • IPS tech prevents the dark trails you see behind enemies on slower panels
  • Look into the MSI G274QPX 27 inch 1440p 240Hz IPS

tl;dr: Grab a 240Hz IPS panel and avoid anything labeled VA for competitive play. I went through this exact headache last year. I originally cheaped out on a high-refresh VA monitor because the box promised deep blacks and fast response times. Total lie, tbh. The ghosting was so bad in Valorant that I couldnt even see heads clearly when peeking corners. It felt like playing with motion blur permanently turned on. You really need to be careful with those 0.5ms or 1ms stickers because they usually involve an overdrive setting that adds gross artifacts to the image. Since youre playing CS and Val, the jump to 240Hz is actually worth it over 144Hz if your PC can push the frames. Just make sure it is an IPS panel. It might not have crazy contrast, but it is reliable and wont flicker like my old setup did.

A bit late but @Reply #1 - good point! Honestly, if you want to win, just go 240Hz. I'm super satisfied with the LG UltraGear 27GR83B-B 27-inch QHD 240Hz IPS. It fits your budget perfectly and the motion clarity is night and day compared to 144Hz. Dont stress the marketing numbers, just get a quality IPS like this one or the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQML1A 27-inch 1440p 260Hz IPS.
