i just bought the 7800x3d for my first ever build but i spent way too much on the gpu so now i only have like $160 left for the motherboard. im super nervous cause i dont understand the difference between b650 or whatever and i dont want to fry it. what is a safe cheap one?

@Reply #3 - good point! WiFi is basically essential nowadays. I have used both of these and they are fantastic:

  • MSI PRO B650-S WIFI DDR5 ATX: Amazing value! The power delivery is rock-solid and the BIOS is super easy to navigate.
  • Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX V2 ATX: Love the build quality here! Those heatsinks are fantastic for keeping everything cool. Keep an eye on PCPartPicker for sales!

Building on the earlier suggestion, I totally agree! These two are also absolute beasts for the price:

  • ASRock B650M-HDV/M.2 Micro ATX: insanely good VRMs!
  • ASRock B650 LiveMixer ATX: amazing style! Youll crush it!

TL;DR: Grab a standard B650 board. Its totally safe and handles the 7800X3D like a champ. I totally get the anxiety lol. When I built my current rig, I dumped way too much money into my graphics card and had basically peanuts left for the rest of the build. I ended up picking a pretty basic B650 board cause I was also scared of frying my expensive CPU. Honestly, I have been super happy with it. It runs my 7800X3D perfectly and the temps stay low even when I am gaming for hours. You dont really need those fancy $400 boards unless you are doing crazy overclocking or need a ton of extra slots. My experience taught me that the budget boards are way more capable than the internet makes them out to be. No complaints here at all, it just works.

In my experience, VRM thermal performance is the main thing to watch. I recommend checking the B650 roundup data on the Hardware Unboxed YouTube channel for objective testing. Over the years, I've tried many budget boards, and the ASRock B650M Pro RS WiFi is consistently reliable. It handles the 7800X3D power draw without breaking a sweat, so you wont have to worry about frying anything.

Honestly youre gonna be so satisfied once this is running. I disagree with the idea that you need a high-end board for a first build just to feel safe. A budget board is totally fine for a DIY rig.

  • How many storage drives are you planning to run?
  • Does your case fit a full ATX board or just Micro-ATX? Doing it yourself is way better than paying for a pro service anyway.

Honestly I am in the exact same situation and it has been a total headache. I also went way over budget on the GPU so now I only have about $150 left for the board. I have been researching VRMs and power phases for days but I still cant decide because I am terrified of damaging the 7800X3D. It is really frustrating that there isnt a simple, definitive answer for those of us on a strict budget who just want a safe build. I have been stuck at this stage for two weeks now and still havent pulled the trigger on a purchase.

Saw this thread this morning. I went cheap on my current setup and have no complaints about the performance.

  • bios was easy
  • zero stability issues Do you need wifi?
