I’m currently planning a new SFF-ish build using the ASUS Prime AP201 case, and I’ve decided to go with the Ryzen 7 7700X. Since I’m aiming for a compact footprint without moving all the way down to ITX, I’m specifically looking for a high-quality Micro-ATX motherboard. I’ve noticed that the AM5 mATX market seems a bit thinner compared to full-sized ATX boards, and I’m having a hard time deciding which one offers the best VRM performance and feature set for the price.
My main priorities are solid power delivery for future CPU upgrades and at least two M.2 NVMe slots (ideally with one being PCIe 5.0). I’ve been looking at the ASRock B650M PG Riptide and the MSI MAG B650M Mortar WiFi, but I’ve heard mixed reviews regarding boot times and BIOS stability on some of these early AM5 platforms. I really want to avoid any major coil whine issues if possible, as this PC will sit right on my desk.
Has anyone here completed a Ryzen 7000 mATX build recently? Between the B650 and B650E chipsets, which specific board would you recommend for the best balance of stability and features in a smaller form factor?
Ngl, picking a B650E board is probably your best bet for that PCIe 5.0 stuff!! Most of them have solid VRMs and things, so just make sure the BIOS is updated for stability lol.

100% agree
So, honestly, picking the right board for a compact AM5 build is kinda tricky right now!! To get the best balance, you realy want to look for something with beefy heatsinks and solid VRMs if ur planning on upgrading later. Tbh, most B650 boards handle the 7700X just fine, but definitely check recent BIOS updates for those boot time issues... they've mostly been fixed lately so it's way better now!!!
Building on the earlier suggestion, I am actually gonna go against the grain here and say be real careful with the B650E hype in an AP201. I have been doing this for a long time, and honestly, chasing PCIe 5.0 on these early mATX boards is often a recipe for headaches. In my experience, those Gen5 controllers run way hotter than people realize. I had a build last year where the heat soak from the drive basically throttled the whole system because the board layout was just too cramped for that kind of speed. It is easy to get caught up in the specs, but I have seen so many guys regret it when they realize the BIOS is unstable or they are dealing with weird coil whine because the power phases are pushed too hard. If you are sitting this right on your desk, stability and silence matter way more than a spec sheet you will never actually saturate. Just watch out for boards that cram too much into a small space... sometimes less is actually more when it comes to long-term reliability and keeping things quiet.
