Best value motherboard for an AMD Ryzen 5 9600X setup?

I'm planning a build around the new Ryzen 5 9600X and want to make sure I pick a motherboard that offers the best bang for my buck. Since the 9600X is pretty efficient, I don't think I need a high-end X670E, but I’m torn between getting a solid B650 board now or waiting for the new 800-series chipsets. I’m mainly looking for good VRMs, at least two M.2 slots, and reliable BIOS support without spending over $200. I've been looking at the MSI Tomahawk and Gigabyte Aorus Elite lines, but I'm curious if there are better hidden gems out there. What motherboard would you recommend that balances features and price for this specific CPU?

Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, the Tomahawk is great, but I had some weird coil whine issues with a recent MSI build, so it kinda bummed me out. If you wanna save some cash, check out the ASRock B650M Pro RS WiFi. It’s usually around $140-$150, has three M.2 slots (one is Gen5!), and basically handles the 9600X without breaking a sweat. It's a total hidden gem for a budget-focused build imo.

Quick question - what kind of case airflow are we looking at here? Before I give advice, i wanna make sure we're not putting a board with weaker heatsinks in a choked case, cuz safety and long-term VRM health are literally everything for me lol.

I've seen some budget boards get sketchy under load, so I'm comparing these two for you:

1. ASUS TUF Gaming B650-PLUS WIFI vs ASRock B650 Steel Legend WiFi
2. **TUF Pros/Cons**: Honestly the most reliable BIOS and safe over-current protection, but it's kinda pricey.
3. **Steel Legend Pros/Cons**: Seriously good 8-layer PCB for signal integrity, tho ASRock's BIOS can be a bit clunky for beginners.

I'd suggest the TUF for pure peace of mind, but let me know about your case first! peace

Ok so, if youre like me and worry about long-term reliability but want to do it all yourself, you should definitely check out the Hardware Unboxed B650 roundup videos on YouTube. Honestly, they are the best resource for seeing actual VRM temps under load so you dont accidentally buy a board that throttles later. Tbh, I always cross-reference those charts with the B650 master spreadsheet on the AMD subreddits before I pull the trigger on a build. One option that hasnt been mentioned is the Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX v2. Its usually well under $180 and has a solid feature set for a 9600X without being overkill. Since you are doing the install yourself, just make sure whatever you get has a physical BIOS Flashback button. Its basically a lifesaver if the board ships with an older BIOS that doesnt recognize the 9000 series chips yet. I wouldnt trust a board without one personally. A few other DIY resources I use:

  • TechSpot B650 Buying Guide
  • PCPartPicker for checking price history
  • The official manufacturer support page to see how often they push BIOS updates Its a bit nerve-wracking to flash the BIOS yourself but if you follow the manual it works out fine tho.

Ok so, i'm still kinda new to this but I've been researching like crazy for my own build! Honestly, if you wanna save some cash but still get solid features, check out the Gigabyte B650 Eagle AX. It's super affordable, usually under $160, and basically has everything you're looking for... including three M.2 slots! The VRMs are totally fine for a 9600X cuz it's so efficient. Just make sure to update the BIOS right away. gl!

Ok so, honestly you're 100% right about the 9600X—it's super efficient so you don't gotta overspend on an X870. I've been running the MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi for a few builds now and I'm seriously happy with it. The VRMs are total overkill for a 9600X, and it's usually around $180! If you want a real hidden gem though, check out the ASRock B650 Steel Legend WiFi. It's got great features for the price. 👍
