I’m finally getting ready to pull the trigger on a flagship Arrow Lake build, but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by the Z890 motherboard lineup. Since I’m going with the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, I want to make sure I pick a board that can actually handle the power demands and squeeze out every bit of performance. I’ve been looking at options from ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte, but the price gaps are wild.

I’m planning on doing some moderate overclocking, so VRM quality is a top priority for me. I also definitely need at least four M.2 slots (ideally with one being PCIe 5.0) and solid Thunderbolt 4 support for my external drives. I’ve noticed some boards are leaning heavily into 'AI' features for tuning, but I’m curious if those are actually useful or just marketing fluff. My budget is around $500-$700, so I’m looking for something high-end but not necessarily the $1,000 extreme enthusiast models unless they are truly worth it.

For those of you who have already started researching or have hands-on experience with the new LGA 1851 socket boards, which Z890 model offers the best balance of power delivery and connectivity for a 285K build?

Ok so, for a flagship build like this, you really gotta prioritize VRM stability above everything else... especially with the power spikes on the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K. Since the Hero and Ace were already mentioned, I’d actually suggest looking at the Gigabyte Z890 AORUS MASTER.

It’s basically a tank and fits perfectly in that $500-$600 range. It has overkill power delivery for moderate overclocking and definitely hits your 4x M.2 requirement with a dedicated Gen5 slot. Just be careful with those 'AI' tuning features—they’re mostly marketing fluff imo. I’d stick to manual bios tweaks to keep things safe and stable. Plus, the Thunderbolt 4 support is rock solid for high-speed external drives. Good luck with the build!!

sooo i've been building high-end rigs for like 15 years now and ngl the Z890 launch is kinda wild. For your Intel Core Ultra 9 285K build, i'd seriously look at the ASUS ROG Maximus Z890 Hero vs the MSI MEG Z890 ACE.

Both are basically tanks with overkill VRMs that'll handle moderate OC no problem. The Hero has that polished BIOS i've grown to trust over the years, while the ACE usually gives u crazy good connectivity for the price.

If u wanna save a bit, the Gigabyte Z890 AORUS MASTER is a decent option too. tbh those 'AI' features are mostly marketing fluff imo, but the auto-tuning is okay if youre lazy lol. Anyway, stick to the Hero if u want the most stable experience! gl!!

Ok so, for that budget, I'd personally look at the ASRock Z890 Taichi. It's honestly a beast for around $500 and *totally* holds its own against the $700+ boards. You get 5+ M.2 slots, including Gen5, and killer power delivery that won't sweat with a Intel Core Ultra 9 285K. Plus, ASRock's BIOS is less bloated than others imo. Those AI tuning features? Mostly marketing fluff tbh... just stick to manual tweaks if ur gonna OC. Good luck!
