I'm finally putting together a new build with a Ryzen 7 7700X, but I'm torn between going with an MSI or a Gigabyte motherboard for the AM5 platform. I've been looking at the B650 series, and while both brands seem solid, I'm hearing mixed things about boot times and BIOS stability on these newer chips. I’m particularly interested in things like VRM cooling performance and how user-friendly the BIOS interface is for simple PBO tuning. For those of you already running a Ryzen 7000 setup, which brand has given you fewer headaches regarding EXPO memory profiles and firmware updates? Would love to hear your hands-on experiences before I pull the trigger!
It’s a tough choice for sure, but I'm curious which specific models you’re actually looking at? Like, are you eyeing the MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI or maybe the Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX?? Also, it’d be pretty helpful to know what RAM kit you’re planning on going with... memory compatibility is usually where the real headaches start, so what speed are you aiming for?
Tbh, it’s kinda a toss-up between them lately! I’ve noticed Gigabyte is actually killing it with faster boot times on AM5, but MSI’s BIOS layout is sooo much easier to navigate for PBO stuff imo. Both brands have *solid* VRMs for a 7700X, so dont stress too much there. Updates fixed most EXPO things anyway... just pick the one with the ports u need lol
Solid advice 👍
Honestly, picking between these two usually comes down to which brand's quirks you're willing to live with. IIRC, MSI has been a bit more consistent with their BIOS updates lately, while Gigabyte seems to be throwing out updates every other week to fix minor stuff. That can be SO annoying if you're a 'set it and forget it' type of person. I'm not 100% sure, but I think I read somewhere that Gigabyte’s 'Revision' system is still active, where they swap out components mid-cycle. It makes finding the right firmware a total headache sometimes. From a market perspective, Gigabyte is being super aggressive with pricing to grab AM5 market share. MSI feels a bit more 'premium' in their mid-range builds but you definitely pay a tax for that. Honestly, for a 7700X, you don't need the world's beefiest board. If you want something that feels more polished, I’d lean MSI, but for pure bang-for-buck, Gigabyte is hard to beat even if their software suite is still kinda trash lol.
Ngl I spent weeks agonizing over this exact choice when I built my 7700X rig. I actually had a really rough start with a different brand that had terrible coil whine, so I swapped over to the MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi and its been a journey... Be careful when you first boot it up tho. The first time I turned it on I legit thought the board was DOA because it took like three minutes to post. You really gotta make sure to enable Memory Context Restore in the BIOS after you turn on EXPO or youll be waiting forever every single time you restart. I would suggest checking out the MSI MPG B650 Carbon WiFi if you have a bit more budget, but the Tomahawk is usually the sweet spot. I was worried about the VRMs getting too hot while messing with PBO curves, but the MSI heatsinks are honestly massive and stay pretty chilly. Just be super careful with the BIOS updates. I always use the Flashback button instead of doing it through the menu just to be safe, even if it feels a bit nerve-wracking. For RAM, I paired mine with G.Skill Flare X5 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30 and it was plug and play, but definitely double check the motherboard QVL list first just in case.
