I’m looking into a new Mac mini or MacBook with the M4 Pro chip, but I’m curious about the internal layout. Does anyone have details on the logic board design and if there are any modular expansion options for storage or ports this time around? I’m trying to decide if I should spec it out now or if there’s any flexibility later. What have you guys found?
Not to disagree, but i've seen some interesting technical shifts lately. While RAM is definitely soldered, the new Apple Mac mini M4 Pro actually uses a modular storage module again, similar to the Studio.
1. It's technically swappable, but proprietary.
2. You'll need an external Satechi Thunderbolt 4 Dock for real port expansion.
3. Honestly, just buy the Apple 1TB SSD Upgrade now because finding third-party modules later is a massive headache.
I've tried many workarounds over the years, and spec-ing it out early is just safer tbh.
Sooo, I actually tried to go the budget route with my last Mac Studio and honestly... it was a bit of a nightmare. I thought I could outsmart Apple's pricing, but it's just getting harder. While the previous reply is right that the Apple Mac mini M4 Pro technically has a removable storage module, it's totally proprietary. If you're looking for a great resource, check out the teardowns on iFixit—they really show how crammed that logic board is.
I personally had issues with external drives disconnecting during big renders, which is literally the worst. If you wanna save cash, maybe look at the OWC Envoy Pro FX 1TB Portable NVMe SSD instead of the Satechi dock mentioned earlier. It’s rugged and actually hits the speeds you need for pro work. But honestly, if you can swing the extra 200 bucks now for the internal 512GB or 1TB upgrade, just do it. Dealing with external cables later is such a hassle, trust me... I've been there and it kinda sucks. gl!
Honestly, after years of tinkering with Macs, my advice is to play it safe and spec it out now. Even if the Apple Mac mini M4 Pro has a modular storage chip, it's still proprietary and super risky to swap yourself. I've seen too many people brick their boards trying to save a few bucks. If you need speed and reliability for the long haul, just pay the Apple tax for the Apple 1TB SSD Upgrade and Apple 48GB Unified Memory upfront. It's safer than relying on a OWC Envoy Pro FX External SSD later, trust me!!
tbh im still trying to wrap my head around all the technical stuff, but it seems like a big jump from the older designs. i was wondering though, are you actually comfortable with opening it up and doing some diy work, or are you looking for a more professional service to handle it if you decide to upgrade down the line? idk if i’d personally trust myself with a soldering iron on something that expensive lol. also are you trying to save money now or is it more about just having the option for later?
Honestly, in my experience with these chips, Apple is basically locking everything down now. I've seen the teardowns and the M4 Pro logic boards are super integrated... everything is soldered on. Like, highkey, there is ZERO flexibility for storage or RAM later. I'd definitely suggest you just go with Apple and spec it out high from the jump. Better to be safe than stuck with a brick that cant be upgraded, you know? gl!
