I'm finally pulling the trigger on an upgrade to the Ryzen 7 9700X, but I'm struggling to pick a B650 motherboard that offers the best bang for my buck. I want to avoid overspending on high-end X670 features I'll never use, but I still need solid VRMs to handle the 9700X during heavy gaming and light productivity. I'm specifically looking for a board with at least two M.2 slots and BIOS flashback support to ensure Zen 5 compatibility out of the box. I've been looking at the MSI Tomahawk and the Gigabyte Aorus Elite, but are there better value options around the $160-$190 price point? Which B650 board would you recommend for a stable, long-term setup?
Seconding the ASRock pick!
- ASRock B650 Pro RS vs MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI
- MSI boots are unfortunately slow. Pro RS is basically the BEST choice, right?
> I've been looking at the MSI Tomahawk and the Gigabyte Aorus Elite, but are there better value options? So basically the consensus is ASRock for value, but honestly, I've had issues with MSI's slow boots lately. For long-term safety, compare the ASUS TUF Gaming B650-PLUS WIFI vs the ASRock B650 Pro RS. The TUF has better surge protection and reliability for a 9700X, while the Pro RS is just cheaper. Both have flashback, which is CRITICAL for Zen 5. Don't risk a cheap VRM setup! gl
Just sharing my experience: I went through this last year when I built my AM5 rig and honestly, picking parts is always the hardest part! • I went with a mid-range MSI board cuz I wanted beefy VRMs for stability. • Not sure but I think the slow boot issues are basically fixed now!
• Flashback was actually a lifesaver during the DIY setup. It’s been rock solid!
I get the worry, picking a stable board is highkey stressful. I'd suggest looking at:
* ASRock B650 Steel Legend WiFi - Best VRMs for the price.
* Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX V2 - Very solid alternative. Honestly, I'd suggest the ASRock. It's built like a tank... but be careful and make sure to use BIOS Flashback before installing the CPU. It's the safest bet for a long-term 9700X build. gl!
I'd suggest looking at MSI for value, but what size case r u using? also do u actually need wifi? just wanna be careful before i recommend a specific board lol
Big if true
Jumping in here - I've spent the last week obsessing over the actual performance metrics on my own 9700X setup. When I was testing my current board, I was less worried about the brand name and more about how the VRM power stages handled the transient response during heavy PBO spikes. Basically what I found during my benching:
- Cinebench R23 stability was rock solid after updating to the latest AGESA.
- VRM temps barely broke 55C even when I pushed the PPT limits.
- Boot times significantly improved once I tweaked the memory context restore settings in ur BIOS. Honestly, the *real* value for me was seeing how the board handled the voltage curves without any Vdroop issues. It's easy to get caught up in the feature lists, but the raw stability during a 4-hour render is where you notice if u made the right choice. My current setup hasn't skipped a beat, and that peace of mind is worth more than a few extra USB ports tbh.
Saving this whole thread. So much good info here you guys are awesome.
