So I finally grabbed the Ryzen 7 9700X today because my old system literally died on me yesterday and I am panicking a little bit because I need this build finished by next weekend for a project I am working on here in Seattle. My budget is like $220 maybe $250 tops if I really push it for the motherboard but I am honestly losing sleep looking at all these different models and brands. I'm mainly using it for heavy gaming and some 4K editing for my side gig and I just dont want to pick something that is gonna bottleneck the CPU or give me constant blue screens.
I did some digging and saw a lot of people recommending the MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk but then I also read a bunch of horror stories about slow boot times and weird memory training issues that take like two minutes every time you turn the thing on which sounds like a nightmare honestly. Then I looked at the ASUS TUF Gaming B650-Plus and some people say the coil whine is unbearable while others say it is the best board for the money. It is so conflicting and I am getting really anxious that I am gonna spend $200 on a piece of junk that wont even start up right.
The 9000 series is still pretty fresh so I am worried about BIOS compatibility too. I know most boards have the flashback button but I have never done that before and the thought of bricking a brand new board makes me feel sick lol. Is it worth looking at the X670 boards or is that just overkill for a 9700X? I dont plan on doing crazy overclocking but I want something stable that wont overheat when I am rendering files for hours.
What should I actually buy? Is there a specific board that is just solid and doesnt have these weird issues?...
Honestly, I went through the same stress when I built my last rig. I ended up picking the Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite AX V2 ATX AM5 and I am super satisfied with it. The boot times are actually pretty quick now after the recent BIOS updates, so dont let those old horror stories scare you too much. It works well and feels really stable even when I am pushing my 9700X during long renders. Another solid option is the ASRock B650 Steel Legend WiFi ATX AM5. It is basically a tank with great VRMs that wont overheat during your 4K editing sessions. Between the two, the Gigabyte feels a bit more refined for the price. I tried the MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi ATX AM5 before and it was fine, but the Aorus BIOS just felt easier to deal with. Stick with B650, X670 is total overkill for what you need tbh.
^ This. Also, I feel your pain with the research rabbit hole. I recently went through a couple of different boards for a 9000 series build and unfortunately, neither really lived up to the hype. One had some really wonky BIOS issues that made my memory training take forever, even after the updates. It’s super frustrating when you just want to get your work done and the hardware is fighting you. Ngl, im kinda disappointed with the quality control on the sub-$250 stuff lately. Quick question tho... how many NVMe drives are you planning to cram in there? And do you actually need Wi-Fi 7 or is the older 6E stuff fine? Knowing that might help figure out if youre paying for features you wont ever use. TL;DR: Mid-range QC is a bit of a gamble right now. Figure out your exact port needs before committing.
Gonna try this over the weekend. Will report back if it works!
Same setup here, love it
Nice, didn't know that
