Finally pulled the trigger on the 7800X3D after staring at benchmarks for like three weeks straight. Im so hyped to get this build going! My old i7-8700k setup is basically a paperweight now so this is gonna be a massive jump for my gaming performance. Im mostly into stuff like Tarkov which I know loves that extra v-cache and I also want to finally max out Cyberpunk at 1440p.

I've been looking at boards and honestly my head is spinning a bit. I saw everyone recommending the MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk because it's apparently the best all-rounder for the price but then I read a few threads saying the boot times are super slow on MSI boards right now? Then I looked at the Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite AX but people keep complaining about coil whine and that sound drives me crazy. I've got about $280 set aside for the motherboard and I really need at least three M.2 slots for all my storage drives. I'm planning to head to Microcenter this Saturday to pick everything up. Should I just stick with the Tomahawk or is there something better in that price range that isnt gonna give me BIOS issues or take two minutes to post every time I turn it on?

^ This. Also, be careful with boot times. Maybe consider:

Had to swap boards twice last year because those slow AM5 boot times were driving me insane. Be careful with the MSI Tomahawk, as those BIOS updates are still kinda hit or miss. I would suggest looking at the ASRock B650E PG Riptide WiFi AM5 ATX at Microcenter instead.

  • Much faster boot times
  • Future-proof PCIe 5.0
  • Easily fits your budget Its been rock solid for my 7800X3D setup.

Regarding what #1 said about "Had to swap boards twice last year because those slow AM5 boot times were driving me insane"

  • I totally get the frustration, but honestly, people overspend on AM5 boards way too much. Over the years, I've seen builders dump $300 into a motherboard that gives zero performance gain over a $180 one. The 7800X3D is crazy efficient and doesn't actually draw that much power, so you're mostly paying for aesthetics and features you might not even use. If you want to save some cash at Microcenter for more storage or a better GPU, here are the ones that actually work for your drive requirements:
  • ASRock B650 Pro RS AM5 ATX
  • This is a sleeper pick. It has three M.2 slots, solid VRMs, and ASRock has been killing it with boot times lately. Usually way under your budget.
  • Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX AM5 ATX
  • This one also has three M.2 slots and I haven't heard any whine from the V2 revisions.
  • ASUS TUF Gaming B650-Plus WiFi AM5
  • Really stable BIOS and great layout for multiple drives. About those MSI boot times... they mostly fixed that with BIOS updates. You just have to enable Memory Context Restore and Power Down Enable together in the settings. Without those, yeah, itll sit there training memory for ages. Since you're going to Microcenter, definitely look at their bundles instead of buying parts solo. You can usually grab the CPU, board, and RAM for way less than your $280 motherboard budget would suggest, which is a much better way to spend your money.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I am not sure it is actually that simple these days. Honestly, modern hardware has been pretty disappointing lately.

  • My buddy tried a similar upgrade and it was a total nightmare ordeal.
  • He spent three weeks troubleshooting ghost issues that made no sense.
  • Eventually he just gave up and went back to his old rig out of pure frustration. It is such a headache dealing with these parts sometimes, ngl.

Great info, saved!

Re: "Building on the earlier suggestion, I am not..." Honestly, I agree. My last board had scary voltage spikes that almost fried my chip. It's disappointing how buggy things feel, just stay safe tho.

Yep been there done that. Can confirm everything said above is spot on.
