I’m finally planning my upgrade to the Ryzen 7 9700X, but I’m a bit stuck on picking the right motherboard. Since it’s based on the Zen 5 architecture, I want to make sure I’m getting a board that handles the power delivery well without overspending on features I won't use. I’ve been looking at some X670E options for future-proofing with PCIe 5.0, but I’m wondering if a solid B650 board would be plenty for this specific 8-core chip. I’m mainly using this for gaming and some light productivity. Does anyone have specific recommendations for a board with great VRMs and at least three M.2 slots? Which motherboard offers the best balance of performance and value for the 9700X right now?

Actually, while the Tomahawk is pretty decent, I kinda disagree on it being the "best" for a 9700X build if you care about future-proofing at all. Tbh, if ur looking for that perfect balance, I’d suggest looking at the ASRock B650E Taichi Lite instead... it’s seriously impressive!!

It’s got insanely beefy VRMs and actually gives u PCIe 5.0 for both ur GPU and primary SSD, which the standard B650 Tomahawk doesn't even have. Since Zen 5 is gonna be around for a while, having that extra bandwidth is sooo worth the small price jump, imo. It still fits that 3x M.2 slot requirement perfectly too. It’s definitely the sweet spot you should be looking at!

Tbh, the MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI is ur best choice. It’s got 3 M.2 slots and beefy VRMs for cheap... so it's a total steal for the 9700X!!

Tbh, you're totally on the right track thinking about B650. The 9700X is actually super power-efficient for an 8-core chip, so you definitely dont need to spend a fortune on a high-end X670E board unless you're planning on some crazy overclocking or need like four Gen5 SSDs (which most of us dont lol).

If you want the absolute best balance of performance and value, I’d highly recommend the MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi. It’s a literal tank. It’s got three M.2 slots, great VRMs that wont even break a sweat with the 9700X, and it’s usually priced really well. Its been my go-to recommendation for a while now because it just works... no flashy gimmicks you wont use.

Now, if youre dead set on that PCIe 5.0 future-proofing for your GPU and main drive, look at the ASUS ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming WiFi. It gives you that "E" chipset (PCIe 5.0 support) without the insane X670E price tag. It also has 3 M.2 slots and looks pretty slick in a build. Personally, id go with the Tomahawk and put the extra 50 or 60 bucks toward faster RAM or a better cooler!! Idk, just seems like a smarter way to spend the budget for light productivity and gaming. Good luck with the build, ur gonna love the jump to Zen 5!!
