I’m finally upgrading to the Ryzen 7 9700X, but I’m having a hard time picking a motherboard. I want to stick with the B650 chipset to keep costs down, but I don't want to sacrifice performance or stability. I'm specifically looking for a board with solid VRMs that can handle the 9700X boost clocks comfortably and at least one PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot for some future-proofing. I’ve been looking at the MSI Mag Tomahawk and the Gigabyte Aorus Elite, but the price gap between models is confusing. Which B650 board do you think offers the absolute best 'bang for your buck' without crossing into overpriced territory?
+1 to what was said earlier. Honestly, ASRock is killin' it, but i think stability and safety should be you're priority... unfortunately i had some weird boot issues with cheaper models.
- ASUS TUF Gaming B650-Plus WiFi — Seriously, it is built like a tank with 12+2 power stages.
- It actually has that PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot too.
Basicly, for a 9700X, youre getting high-end protection without the overpriced markup. gl!
Big if true
In my experience, I’d suggest the ASRock B650 Steel Legend WiFi. Honestly, it’s a total BEAST for the money!! It hits all your marks:
* PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot (huge plus)
* Beefy VRMs that wont sweat with 9700X boosts
* Great I/O layout
It’s basically the sweet spot... you get the Gen5 slot that the Tomahawk actually lacks. Seriously amazing value for a mid-range build. gl!
For your situation, I would suggest the ASRock B650 Pro RS. In my experience, it is honestly the hidden gem for value right now. While many focus on flashier models, this board hits that PCIe 5.0 M.2 requirement while keeping the cost much lower than something like the MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI.
Here's why it fits a DIY build:
- It features a Blazing M.2 slot (Gen5) for future-proofing storage.
- The 14+2+1 VRM setup is beefy enough that the 9700X wont even break a sweat.
- Basically, it's the best "no-frills" board that doesnt feel cheap.
Quick tip: Be sure to flash the latest BIOS immediately for Zen 5 stability. Also, if you use a Gen5 drive, ensure your case has solid airflow cuz those things run HOT!! gl!
TIL! Thanks for sharing
Works great for me
Curious about one thing: are you planning to drop a Gen5 drive in there immediately, or are you just looking for future-proofing? It makes a big difference cuz Gen5 lanes usually hike the price up quite a bit.
Saw this earlier but just now responding... anyway, I've done a ton of market research for my own 9000-series build and here's the breakdown from a professional perspective:
* **VRM overkill:** Honestly, since the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X is so power-efficient, you dont need the most expensive VRMs. Even a mid-range board is technically overkill, which is great for long-term stability and boost clocks.
* **The "E" Factor:** If you really want PCIe 5.0 for the M.2, you're usually looking at "B650E" boards. I've been pretty happy with the MSI MPG B650 CARBON WIFI lately—it's a step up from the Tomahawk and has awesome thermals.
* **Performance pick:** Another one to look at is the ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-F GAMING WIFI. It hits that Gen5 requirement and the BIOS is super easy to work with for tuning the 9700X.
Tbh, the Tomahawk mentioned earlier is solid, but it lacks that Gen5 slot you're after. gl!
Just caught this thread today. Tbh most people overthink the VRMs for the 9700X since its actually pretty efficient, but if you want that Gen 5 slot for future-proofing, you gotta look at the B650E boards or the higher-end B650 models. Check out these two:
This is basically an enthusiast board sold at a discount because they stripped off the fancy aesthetic shrouds. It has a massive 24-phase power delivery which is total overkill but keeps things super cool. You get PCIe 5.0 on both the GPU and M.2 slots. Just keep in mind its an E-ATX board, so it might be a tight fit in smaller cases.
If you like the MSI BIOS, this is the one to get over the Tomahawk. It actually gives you that Gen 5 M.2 slot you're looking for and the 16-phase VRM is more than enough for a 9700X even with PBO cranked up. It fits standard cases and the stability is top notch. Honestly id go with the Taichi Lite for the raw performance specs, but the Carbon is a great alternative if you dont want to deal with a wider motherboard.
Here's what I recommend:
TL;DR: Go with the ASRock B650E PG Riptide WiFi.
Compared to the MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI or Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX V2, the ASRock actually has that PCIe 5.0 M.2 you want without a massive price jump. It’s basically high-end specs for mid-range money and has worked perfectly for me... honestly zero complaints so far!
Ok adding this to my list of things to try. Thanks for the tip!
