I'm currently putting together a new build centered around the RX 7800 XT, and I'm feeling a bit stuck on the memory side of things. Since the 7800 XT is such a powerhouse for 1440p gaming, I want to make sure I’m not creating a bottleneck by choosing the wrong RAM kit. I’ve been debating between sticking with a high-end DDR4 setup to save some money or just biting the bullet and going with a DDR5-capable motherboard for better future-proofing.
I’m primarily looking at either the Ryzen 7 5800X3D (DDR4) or the Ryzen 7 7700X (DDR5) to pair with the GPU. My main concern is whether the performance jump with DDR5 actually justifies the extra cost when paired specifically with this card. I’ve heard that 32GB is the sweet spot nowadays, but I'm unsure about the ideal speeds and CL timings—like if 3600MHz CL16 for DDR4 or 6000MHz CL30 for DDR5 is the way to go.
Has anyone tested this card with both memory types? If you were building a rig with a 7800 XT today, which RAM configuration would you pick for the best price-to-performance ratio?
sooo i went through this last year when I was building my 1440p rig. honestly, I was torn between the same two paths because the price gap for a full platform swap felt kinda steep at the time. I ended up building around the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D and paired it with the G.Skill Ripjaws V 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 memory. In my experience, that L3 cache on the X3D chips basically negates a lot of the memory latency issues, so DDR4 still felt snappy as hell with my Sapphire Pulse AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT.
But yeah, fast forward a few months and I actually helped a buddy set up a AMD Ryzen 7 7700X build with G.Skill Flare X5 Series 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5-6000 CL30. Lowkey, while the raw FPS in most games felt pretty similar, his 1% lows were a bit more stable in heavy titles like Cyberpunk. Basically, DDR4 is fine for now, but DDR5 is where the bandwidth is headed. Quick tip: If you go DDR5, stick to 6000MHz CL30; it’s basically the sweet spot for Infinity Fabric stability. Also, dont overthink the speed too much—timings matter way more for those minimum frame rates! gl with the build!! 👍
Building on the earlier suggestion, I actually had a pretty annoying experience trying to stick with DDR4 for a 1440p build recently. I thought I was being smart saving cash, but the platform just felt sluggish in heavy open-world games. Honestly, seeing the 1% lows dip on a card as good as the 7800 XT was super disappointing. Quick question tho, what is your actual hard limit for the motherboard and RAM combo? Prices are fluctuating a lot lately and that changes the value play. I eventually gave up on my old setup and grabbed the Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30 for an AM5 build. It was a headache to set up at first because of some BIOS instability—standard early-adopter tax I guess—but it runs circles around the DDR4 stuff now. If you want to save a bit, the TeamGroup T-Force Vulcan DDR5 32GB 5600MHz CL32 is okay, but unfortunately, it doesnt have the same overhead for tightening timings as the more expensive kits. TL;DR: DDR4 is basically a dead end. Get a 6000MHz CL30 DDR5 kit to actually let that GPU breathe.
