Building in a Fractal Terra and clearance is a total nightmare lol. Torn between G.Skill Flare X5 and the non-RGB Corsair Vengeance kits for my 7800X3D build.

  • budget is $110 max
  • need it by Friday
  • must clear a Noctua NH-L9a

Which one actually fits better for SFF?

Be careful with heatsinks. I'd suggest Crucial 32GB Kit 2x16GB DDR5 5600MT/s CL46 because it's only 31.25mm tall. It fits easily and stays way under your $110 budget.

To add to the point above: you might want to consider verifying the exact module height as some heatsinks are deceptively tall. For a reliable and budget-conscious setup, I would suggest:

> @Reply #3 - good point! I actually disagree slightly on using kits with heatsinks. IIRC standard JEDEC unbuffered modules without spreaders are usually the safest bet. I think those sit at exactly 30.0mm which is lower than basically any gaming kit out there. I've used them and I'm very satisfied with how they fit. Works well and I've had zero complaints about temps in SFF cases. Not 100% sure if you'll like the green or black PCB look but for pure clearance it's the best approach... honestly it just simplifies the build.

ngl building in the Terra is a nightmare like you said. I had issues with the Vengeance height recently and it wasnt as low profile as I hoped which was super annoying. The Flare ones actually sit a tiny bit lower.

  • check the spine position
  • watch the side panel gap Its disappointing that brands dont make them even shorter tbh. Let me know if you run into more trouble!

Honestly the Flare X5 is basically the gold standard for SFF builds right now because its just so short. At 33mm it fits under almost anything. I checked prices and the G.Skill Flare X5 Series 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30 is usually right around $105 so it fits your budget perfectly. If you want to save a few bucks and maybe get even better clearance tho you should check out the Teamgroup T-Create Expert Overclocking 32GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30. It is also super low profile at 32mm and doesnt have those weird fins or edges that catch on stuff. The Vengeance non-RGB is actually 35mm tall... it doesnt sound like much but in a Terra every mm counts when you are trying to minimize fan turbulence against the side panel. Since you are using the Noctua NH-L9a-AM5 Low-Profile CPU Cooler you should be mostly fine anyway because that cooler is tiny and doesnt usually overhang the slots on most AM5 ITX boards. The main thing is just making sure the spine of the Terra is set so your GPU fits too. I would personally grab the Flare X5 because its rock solid with the 7800X3D. Both should arrive by Friday if you use a fast shipping option.
