I'm currently putting together a high-end build centered around the Intel Core i9-12900K and an ASUS ROG Strix Z690-E motherboard, but I’m hitting a bit of a wall regarding the memory. Since the Z690 chipset supports both DDR4 and DDR5, I’m feeling pretty torn on which way to go for the best stability and performance. I’ve heard that the 12900K can be a bit picky with high-frequency gear, and I really want to avoid any persistent BSOD issues or boot failures.
I’m mainly using this rig for heavy 4K video editing and some competitive gaming, so I need something that can handle a decent workload without breaking a sweat. I was looking at a G.Skill Trident Z5 6000MHz kit, but I've seen some users mention they had trouble hitting those XMP speeds on certain BIOS versions. Should I stick with a lower-latency DDR4 kit if I want total stability, or is it worth the premium to jump into DDR5 at this stage?
For those of you running a 12900K on a Z690 board, what specific RAM kits have been 'plug-and-play' for you, and did you have to do any manual voltage tweaking to get them stable?
> I’m feeling pretty torn on which way to go for the best stability and performance.
tbh i went with ddr5 for my 12900k and i've been sooo happy with it. but before you jump in, what total capacity are you looking at? like 32gb or 64gb? also, how much time do you wanna spend tweaking in the bios? ddr4 is basically plug-and-play stability, but ddr5 really shines for 4k video work once you get it dialed in. gl!
Seconding the recommendation above! DDR5 is basically the way to go for the 12900K, but honestly, you gotta be careful with your budget. When I built mine, I almost went overboard on high-speed kits.
Before you pull the trigger, I have a couple questions:
- What's your total budget for the RAM specifically?
- Are you planning to run 2 sticks or 4?
In my experience, 4 sticks can be sooo much harder to stabilize at XMP speeds on Z690, so keep that in mind!
Look, if you want total stability for video work, you gotta check the motherboard QVL list first. Dont just buy what looks fastest on paper. Over the years Ive found that early Z690 BIOS versions really struggle with 4 sticks of DDR5, so stick to a 2-stick kit if you can. I have been using the Corsair Vengeance DDR5 5600MHz CL36 32GB Kit on a few 12900K builds and its been rock solid without needing to touch voltages manually. The 6000MHz G.Skill kit is nice, but 5600MHz is kinda the sweet spot where you wont be fighting with BSODs every time you try to render a project. Also, grab the latest BIOS from the ASUS support site before you even enable XMP. That usually fixes like 90% of the memory training issues people complain about on those boards. Reliability always beats a tiny speed bump when you have deadlines to meet.
