Ive been using mechs for years—mostly custom builds with QMK—but I just started this new contract in London and this locked down workstation they gave me is being a total pain. My current board wont even register during the boot sequence so I cant get into my settings. Its super urgent since I have a massive deadline. Looking for something high-end but totally driver-less and plug-and-play. Budget is 150 quid and I need to buy it today. What is honestly the best mechanical keyboard that will work with any desktop model no matter how weird the hardware is?
Coming back to this... had a thought. Are you needing a full numpad for your contract work or is a TKL okay? Stock in London shops can be kinda random so knowing if you can go smaller would help. Ive been super satisfied with my Varmilo boards for years. Honestly no complaints, they just work perfectly on every weird legacy system Ive plugged them into.
@Reply #1 - good point! Just saw this... you might want to consider the Filco Majestouch 2 TKL Cherry MX Brown. Be careful with modern NKRO implementations as they can fail in BIOS on specific workstations. The Filco is legendary for compatibility because it uses standard HID drivers. Another solid choice is the Varmilo VA87M Moonlight Cherry MX Silent Red. Both are purely hardware-based and wont require any software at all.
