Im trying to put together my first build next month for some video editing here in London. I heard people talking about VRMs being super important for the new 9900X3D so it doesnt overheat but I have no idea what to look for or which board is best... which one should I actually get?
Ive built dozens of high-end rigs over the years and honestly, the ASRock X870E Taichi AM5 is an absolute beast for VRMs lately. It runs way cooler during long renders than some pricier boards Ive tried. On the other hand, the Gigabyte X870E AORUS MASTER has much better BIOS menus in my experience, tho the heatsinks are massive. Both handle that 9900X3D without breaking a sweat.
Just found this thread and man... honestly had some really bad luck with certain brands lately. I bought what I thought was a solid board for my last edit and the VRMs just couldnt handle the sustained load. Throttled my CPU to a crawl within ten minutes. Its so frustrating that these companies keep skimping on thermal pads and decent heatsinks while jacking up the prices. Really makes you lose faith in the market tbh.
Stick with ASUS or MSI for this. Both brands usually overbuild their power phases on the higher end boards, which helps with sustained video rendering loads. I have seen decent thermal results on their mid-to-high tier products lately. Just pick a top-tier board from either brand and it will handle the 9900X3D easily.
Saw this thread earlier and I am so hyped for your first build! Video editing in London sounds like a dream. Regarding what #2 said about "Ive built dozens of high-end rigs over the..." - that kind of pro insight is amazing, but since you are just starting out I want to make sure you dont overspend on features you might never touch. I have a couple quick questions so we can find the perfect balance:
