So Ive been trying to save up some money from my part time job to finally get a real laptop because my old chromebook is basically a brick at this point lol. I really want to be able to play some games like the sims 4 with a bunch of mods and maybe start playing that hogwarts game but I am totally lost with all the numbers and letters they put in the titles. I went to best buy yesterday and the guy was talking about gpus and ram and stuff and I just felt like an idiot honestly so sorry if this is a really basic question. My budget is strictly $800 because that is all I have saved and I need to buy it before I go back to school next month. I saw some stuff about acer nitro and lenovo legion maybe? but people online keep saying certain ones get really hot or have bad screens and I dont even know what makes a screen bad or good really. Im just looking for something that wont lag every five seconds and will actually last me a year or two without falling apart.

  • budget is 800 max
  • mostly for sims 4 and some newer games
  • i live in the US
  • need to buy it in the next 2 weeks

Which gaming laptop under $800 actually offers the best value for money right now?

Honestly, 800 is a bit tight but you can totally find something decent. Ive used the Acer Nitro 5 i5-12500H RTX 3050 and it handles Sims fine, tho it gets a bit loud. The Lenovo LOQ 15 Ryzen 7 7840HS RTX 4050 is a safer bet imo because the build quality is better and it runs cooler for Hogwarts Legacy. Both work, but the LOQ feels way more reliable for the long haul.

Unfortunately, finding quality under 800 is a nightmare. Most are just cheap plastic. Look for ASUS TUF Gaming F15 i5-12500H RTX 4050 on sale... its slightly more durable than those others.

Building on the earlier suggestion, the Lenovo is a solid pick, but I also think the HP Victus 15.6 Gaming Laptop Ryzen 5 7535HS RTX 4050 is a great value right now. I've used this model and was very satisfied with how quiet the fans stay during lighter games. For those Sims 4 mods, you really want to make sure you have 16GB of RAM or it's gonna stutter once you add a bunch of custom content. Most budget laptops ship with 8GB but it's usually an easy fix to add more later. If you want the most power possible under 800, the Gigabyte G5 KF i5-12500H RTX 4060 often goes on sale for around $750. It works well and the screen is decent enough for what you're doing. No complaints here on performance for either of these... they'll both be a massive upgrade from a chromebook lol.
